Medical Nutrition Therapy for Autoimmune Disease

6-week Lifestyle and Nutrition Guidance for the management of autoimmune conditions.

After an initial consultation, your dietitian will invite you to participate in this six-week program designed to enhance your nutrition and lifestyle practices for improved autoimmune symptom management.

It is unrealistic to expect that a single dietary intervention approach is right for everyone. Nonetheless, we can all benefit from increasing the nutrient density of the foods we consume, tuning into the foods our bodies may be sensitive to, and adopting a lifestyle that supports overall mind and body wellness.

If you are deemed a good candidate for this approach, here is what you can expect:

The Autoimmune Protocol (AIP)

AIP is a specialized, anti-inflammatory diet designed to help individuals with autoimmune diseases reduce symptoms, identify food sensitivities, and promote gut healing. It is an extension of the Paleolithic (Paleo) diet but includes strategic food eliminations and a focus on nutrient-dense, healing foods.

Key Principles of AIP

Elimination Phase

Removes foods that may trigger inflammation, damage the gut lining, or cause immune system overreactions.

Eliminates:

  • Grains (wheat, rice, corn, oats, etc.)
  • Dairy (milk, cheese, yogurt)
  • Legumes (beans, lentils, peanuts, soy)
  • Nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Eggs
  • Processed foods, refined sugars, and food additives
  • Alcohol and caffeine

Adds In Nutrient-Dense Healing Foods

Focuses on whole, unprocessed foods that support gut health and reduce inflammation.

Includes:

  • Grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, and organ meats
  • Fresh vegetables (except nightshades)
  • Healthy fats (olive oil, coconut oil, avocado)
  • Bone broth and fermented foods (for gut health)
  • Herbs (except seed-based spices)

(Please note, this is not a comprehensive list.)

Gut Healing & Lifestyle Support

  • Encourages gut health through probiotic foods and digestive support.
  • Prioritizes lifestyle factors such as stress reduction, sleep, and gentle movement.

Reintroduction Phase

  • After symptoms improve (typically 60–90 days), foods are slowly reintroduced one at a time to identify potential triggers.
  • This phase helps individuals personalize their diet based on what their body can tolerate.

AIP is not a long-term diet but rather a tool to identify food triggers and support healing before transitioning to a personalized, sustainable diet.
